Earth Electrode

A 12.7mm diameter (1/2") copper earth electrode is a standard component used in grounding and lightning protection systems to safely dissipate fault currents into the ground. These electrodes are available in two primary types: solid copper for highly corrosive soils and copper-bonded steel for general applications requiring higher mechanical strength for deep driving.

• Diameter: 12.7mm (actual shank diameter often slightly less to accommodate threads). 
• Common Lengths: 1200mm, 1500mm, 1800mm, 2400mm, and 3000mm.
• Thread Size: Typically 9/16" UNC-2A for threaded variants.
• Material Composition:
  • Solid Copper: 99.9% high-conductivity hard-drawn copper.
  • Copper-Bonded: Steel core with a 0.25mm to 0.254mm thick layer of 99.9% pure copper.
• Weight: Approximately 1.55kg for a 1500mm rod.

• Corrosion Resistance: The copper layer protects the steel core from oxidation in moisture-heavy or high-salt soils.
• High Conductivity: Ensures efficient dissipation of fault currents and lightning strikes to protect equipment and personnel.
• Standards Compliance: High-quality rods often comply with IEC 62561-2 and UL 467 standards.
• Installation: Threaded rods can be coupled together to reach deeper ground levels with lower resistivity.
